This week, award-winning physicist Dr Youmna Mouhamad launches a pre-order campaign
for the Nyfasi Deluxe Detangler which we think will be a game changer for afro hair care.
Who is Youmna Mouhamad? Well, she is a scientist from Mayotte who is now based in
Wales in the United Kingdom (UK). She has a BSc in Chemistry/Physics from Marseille Aix
University, France, a MPhys in Physics from Leeds University and a PhD in Polymer Physics
from Sheffield University, both in England. In 2014 she joined Swansea University in Wales
as a research engineer working on the formulation of carbon-based inks for various
applications including a flexible ink for heated garments. Two patents were filed for her
innovative technologies. She then worked on two Innovate UK projects: developing a
screen-printed antenna and tunable capacitor for an energy harvesting device and
modelling metallisation grids on solar cells.
Youmna then went on to use her expertise in printing to invent the Nyfasi Deluxe Detangler
through her own company, Myana Naturals. She actually developed the product with 50
women giving their input on the idea, production and packaging. More than a detangling
comb, the ergonomically designed hand-held product enables the user to apply and
distribute conditioner whilst detangling the hair. It uses a patented roller mechanism to coat
the hair and a wide-tooth comb to detangle it. From 25 April 2022, we can all pre-order the
detangler from her website.
In 2020, she was awarded the London-based Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise
Fellowship that enables academics to exploit the commercialisation of their technology. She
used this to develop her product at the University of South Wales. It has been an incredible
journey for the ‘scientist-inventor-entrepreneur’ and we hope to share more of it with you
here.
On the way, she is racking up the recognition for her scientific skills and entrepreneurial
drive, raising the profile for women of colour in science and inventors alike. She is an
AccelerateHER Rising Star Award Winner for 2022, as a female founder with a bright future. She was the winner of the Wales-based Chwarea Teg Womenspire 2020 Woman in STEM Award, and in 2021 received recognition from the Talents from French Overseas Departments. Youmna has featured on multiple national and international media outlets including ITV, BBC Afrique, BBC UK, and BBC Women’s Hour, and was invited to speak at the Welsh and the French Parliaments.
