Maxwell Tawanda Chirehwa is a quantitative clinical pharmacologist with a large global pharmaceutical company, and a father of two.
What or who inspired your spark for science?
My childhood dream was to become a pharmacist. Before my undergraduate studies in Zimbabwe, I had the opportunity to work in a pharmacy for a few months. I was fascinated by the details on prescriptions: tds, bid, qd, take with a meal, etc. I always wondered why some drugs were taken once or twice or three times a day.
For you, what’s the most enjoyable thing about being a scientist?
I enjoy using my quantitative skills to solve everyday challenges related to the burden of old and emerging diseases. I constantly learn new things through working in multidisciplinary teams and contributing to the body of knowledge we have about how drugs work. Mostly, I’m driven by the need to ensure that patients receive the right dose of the right treatment.
When you’re not working out how the body handles drugs you…
… Love sports. You will usually find me watching football, volleyball or athletics. I’ve also recently started playing badminton.
Maxwell has a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Zimbabwe. He also holds an MSc in Biostatistics from the University of Zimbabwe and a Master of Statistics from Hasselt University, Belgium. In 2018 he obtained a PhD in Pharmacometrics from the University of Cape Town.
